Oaklands reaches out to the local community by taking seriously Jesus' mandate to feed, heal, visit, and clothe those in need.  We have partnered with the Laurel Advocacy and Referral Services (LARS) to sponsor an on-site apartment that provides transitional shelter to homeless families, and a food pantry that serves our local community.  We have a small garden on the church grounds, which provides fresh produce to pantry clients throughout the summer.  We pray the Spirit will nurture and inspire us, as the self-development of others emerges from our outreach.

Food Pantry

The Oaklands emergency Food Pantry has provided non-perishable food to Laurel residents in need since 1990.  Recipients that meet Government eligibility requirements are referred to Oaklands by LARS. The food is provided by the Federal Government, the State of Maryland, and donations from our congregation and local community.  Oaklands planted an onsite garden to supply fresh produce to the food pantry including tomatoes, squash, peppers, and green beans.

Although we have Government and state assistance, donations are always needed to meet the demand.  A collection basket is located in the narthex. Monetary donations are graciously accepted if you would prefer that our food pantry committee purchase the most critically needed items. Checks for the food pantry can either be placed in the offering plate or given to the office with “food pantry” noted in the check memo.

Emergency Shelter

In cooperation with LARS, Oaklands provides temporary residence for up to 60 days to individuals and families in crisis, while transitional housing is arranged. The private shelter in the church has three rooms, including a living room with a sofa bed, dining area, and a bedroom and bath with access to a full kitchen.

Boy Scouts

Boy Scout Troop #9 has been affiliated with the church for over twenty years.  They meet at Oaklands in the basement every Wednesday evening from 7:30PM until 9:00PM.  The Boy Scouts go camping, volunteer in the community, and help with the annual church clean-up.  In the fall, the troop has an annual food drive where they donate hundreds of cans of food to the church’s food pantry.  For those who would like to join Boy Scout Troop 9, please call the church office for contact information.

Girl Scouts

Girl Scout Troop 3174 meets at Oaklands in the Classroom 8/9 every Friday evening from 7:30PM until 9:00PM.  The Girl Scouts go camping, volunteer in the community, and maintain an onsite vegetable garden for our food pantry.  In the spring, the troop helps spread mulch and plant flowers during the annual spring clean up.  For those who would like to join Girl Scout Troop 3174, please call the church office for contact information.
